Composite resin restorations are an economical quality alternative to silver amalgam fillings. These are tooth coloured and bonded to the surrounding tooth structure making them suitable for front and back teeth. As a result teeth filled with composite resin tend to be stronger due to the filling being bonded to the surrounding tooth structure. On the other hand amalgam fillings although very strong as a material, tend to weaken the surrounding tooth structure causing cracks and fractures of the teeth they have been placed in. Composite resin restorations can be done directly in the chair and only require one visit.
Extensively filled back teeth can now be rebuilt with the modern technology of porcelain to restore teeth to their pre-filled condition. Utilising highly glazed colour matched ceramic back teeth (molars, premolars) can be rebuilt to ideal long term strength.
